Organizing My Home Office
Working from home is a dream come true for many parents and people who appreciate having their own space. However, there are challenges that arise that must be dealt with if working at home is to continue. Many people find it hard not to get distracted by things that need to be done around the home, the television, or by friends who don’t understand that work time needs to be respected for work time and that it isn’t just all fun and games to stay home. Creating a functional work area can help you to entertain clients, stay focused during work hours that you’ve set for yourself, and avoid delaying getting your work done.
Now, there are some advantages to having your workspace in your home. You can do whatever you want with the space, a luxury that most professionals don’t have. Decorate with personal memorabilia, add shelving and cabinets wherever you want, and you can even play your own music at whatever volume you please while you’re working within the confines of your own home.
Some people complain that home begins to feel like work after they’ve been at it for a while. Avoid this type of “work at home burnout” by creating a totally separate space for work. When you enter your home office, say to yourself and anyone else who is interested, “I’m going to work.” Simply stating it will help you to focus on the task at hand. Give yourself break times like you would have in a normal office setting. If you start to feel trapped, take a break and go for a walk, run an errand, or make yourself a cup of tea. Enjoy it away from your work area so that when you come back, you’re refreshed and feel like you’ve taken an actual break.
Making your office usable means having everything that you may need organized and easily accessible. You can also make your work area attractive for clients or coworkers that may end up visiting you at your home office. Provide seating, magazines, flowers, even a television for people that may need to wait for you to do something. Make your home office look as much like a professional office as possible. Provide a place for them to hang their coats and put their purses or umbrellas when they come in. A simple hanging bar that mounts to the wall can make a big difference. Stock it with hangers that are appropriate for their coats, like wooden clothes hangers or hotel hangers if you’re worried about the specialty hangers leaving your office and ending up somewhere else in your house.
Keeping things nice will help you not to dread work and help to show your clients that you are a serious professional, even working from your home.
